The God Box is a tool for letting go . . .

I first heard about the "God Box" nearly 35 years ago at a 12 step meeting.  A member of the group said that when she wrote a note to God about a situation that was  troubling her, she felt better and the problem seemed to get resolved relatively quickly.   I couldn't wait to try it.  I had been weighed down by struggles for so long, it seemed. It was clear from what she said that any kind of container would work as the "box."  I went home immediately after the meeting and set about finding the perfect container.  It was a gold metal can with a lid that h[...]

We see what and who we want to see. . .

I heard a great message this morning at The Recovery Church in St. Paul.  It was about the power we each have to experience life how we'd like it to be.  It falls on us to see differently if we want a different experience. Shifting our perception of a person or a situation does change us; it changes our attitude and our behavior. Perhaps you think it's hard to shift your perception but I assure you, it isn't.  It takes a little willingness to ask our Higher Power for the help  to do it. That's all.  And that's not very much, is it? I heard about this "tool[...]

There are no coincidences. . .

Often we hear a person say, "Wow, is that a coincidence!" I say it too, actually, but now I mean some thing quite different from what I used to mean. I have quit believing in "coincidences," in the traditional sense.  When I first heard others in 12 step rooms say that there are no coincidences, only God's anonymous interventions, I passed it off as nonsense.  I was sure I had had many coincidences in my life. Now I know that my Higher Power, whom I choose to call God, has intervened on many occasions, creating coincidences that were life-sustaining,  or I[...]

When you have learned how to decide with God, all decisions become as easy and as right as breathing. . .

Every morning I participate in a phone conference with eight or ten women and we discuss a spiritual passage from a book that we all read together on the call.  This morning's message was the title of this blog and reading it gave me such comfort.  I fought the idea of letting God be in charge for so many years, in childhood and as an adult.  He simply didn't cross my mind with much frequency which seems strange to recall since He crosses my mind multiple times a day now.  And if his presence lived in the frontal lobe of my mind, I'd never be at a loss for wha[...]

Teaching an old dog new tricks. . .

Whew!!  I am struggling to learn some thing new. I have never been very high tech.  In fact, my first five books were written in long hand and I hired a typist just as I had done for my dissertation in graduate school.  At the urging of friends I decided to give the computer a go and amazed myself that I could type and think simultaneously. When it came to the internet, I again was timid at first, but I did go forward and learned how to  e-mail and explore the web for information. Next came a need for a web site.  Writers need one I was told.  But how[...]

Letting go is a gift to us. . .

I referred to the spiritual value inherent in the slogan, Let Go and Let God, in the last blog.  I mention it again because it's so important to free ourselves of stress and any time we try to take the reigns that either belong to some one else or to God, we are going to be met with frustration, stress, anger or, at the very least, resistance.  No one wins when we are intent on trying to be in charge of the circumstances of some one else's life.  We may even have a very good idea for them to try, but if they resist, we simply must let go. I have done a lot of[...]

We are where we're supposed to be. . .

I find great relief in this idea.  I guess it's because I have had many experiences throughout my early life that made little sense at times.  Simply putting my "unbelief" in the idea aside, as was suggested to me by a woman much wiser than myself a few years ago, opened the door to a whole new way to experience life.  Now I feel great waves of peace just knowing that whom ever I need to meet, I will.  What ever I need to learn will come my way.  That the life tapestry I am weaving is divinely ordained. Does this seem farfetched to you when you look at your[...]

The joy of unexpected outcomes. . .

My family has been here visiting all week.  There was a time in my life that I'd have been overwhelmed by anxiety over what could go wrong; how discussions could go awry; how to control the always uncontrollable when it comes to other people, the weather, the news cycles that could lead to tension and on and on. When I face this honestly, in the far distant past (from childhood on) I was always on pins and needles trying to control what could never be controlled.  I still want "to go there" some times, but I have learned that that door is closed! Tight.  And I[...]

Rightmindedness is a decision. . .

Perhaps you are wondering what I mean by rightmindedness?  I think of it as the alignment of our mind with the will of God.  Something that I started doing some years ago was asking myself if what I was thinking was what God would want me to think and if it wasn't, seeking God's help in changing the thought. This simple exercise has been quite helpful and it has improved my relations with others.  It really doesn't take more than a second or two to ask the question, and the answer comes ever so quietly but instantaneously.  My job is to listen. Making the dec[...]

Service to the country and one another. . .

I have thought a lot about the sacrifices that so many men and women make in service to this country.  And men and women have been making these sacrifices for this country since the revolutionary war.  If we were to tabulate the number of those who have died, it would be in the millions.  And if we added to that number those who had been gravely maimed, coupled with the emotional toll on their family members, the number would be in the tens of millions.  Giving a moment of silent prayer and thanks to all of those men and women and their families seems like suc[...]
