Getting back to basics. . .

I just returned from a wonderful week end retreat in Nags Head, North Carolina, with 160 fabulous women.  I led the group through a series of presentations on a journey for creating more hope in our lives.  And true to form, my own level of hope for making the changes, creating the possibilities for further enlightenment that I desire, materialized. What we give away does come back to us, ten-fold.  And what we share with others we generally need to be reminded of ourselves.

This is an axiom that has rung true in my life ever since introduced to it in the rooms of recovery three and a half decades ago.  We have all been privy to the idea that every thing we ever needed to know we learned in kindergarten.  Perhaps that’s true, in fact.  However, I never went to kindergarten but I can say, without a moment’s hesitation, that every thing I need to know to make my life work on a daily basis today, I learned in the rooms of recovery.  My blueprint for living was outlined in the Steps of the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous.  With the help of those steps, and the program slogans too, there will never be a situation confronting me that I can’t handle.

I trust the wisdom of this implicitly.   If you are unfamiliar with these steps or slogans, google “the twelve steps of alcoholics anonymous” and see, for yourself, how accessible their wisdom is.  Problems of any kind can become a thing of the past.

I just returned from this same retreat and it was an honor to have you as our director. You are truly an inspiration to me and I’m sure many others. I want to thank you for the conversation we had regarding the “calling” I beleive I have. You gave me sooo much hope. I am looking forward to what God has in store. You are truly an angel for women. I have already begun writing in my new notebook and started the excercises to benefit the cultivation of hope. Thank you for that. I can’t wait to share with you, the progress and evolution of my hope and my “calling.” Thank you Karen…my sister Gullfriend.

I am so blessed, Karen, to have met you at the retreat. I came home with a renewed sense of self and the courage to be true to it. The twelve steps have indeed taught me, too, how to not only get through every situation presented to me – but to learn and grow from them. I loved hearing you say that we are already prepared for anything that can come our way. I would never have believed that before entering the rooms. Now I can embrace life fully knowing that I am right where I belong at all times.
Thank you for an incredible weekend. I hope we meet again soon! ♥ Noelle

    Thanks for your invitation Karen.
I am trying to follow your example of making the twelve steps my blueprint for life. I have become a Sponsor for the first time and we are working the steps together. I have finally opened the book The 12 by 12 and I am reading the instructions on how to work these steps.
My sponsoree has also forwarded The Big Book in Action class to me via the internet. I tryed going to the class but found it almost impossible, because of my arthritis, to sit in class after sitting eight hours at work.
Now, I can sit, stand and even streatch during the class while doing it at home.
So, I am growing with the help of other people, AA and the Twelve Steps.

    Thank You

Karen, it was a true blessing to have you and all your wisdom, experience and hope shared with us at the retreat. What impressed me the most is that after three decades of this journey, your ability to really live by the spiritual principles the 12 step program has to offer has not faded. Each day truly is a new beginning and the greatest hope I took away from this weekend is that three decades of one day at a time can and will enhance anyone’s ability to find joy in everything we do as you have shown us through your words, and your actions. Thank you for being an incredible inspiration to me in this journey.
