{"id":2032,"date":"2011-08-29T17:03:41","date_gmt":"2011-08-29T22:03:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.womens-spirituality.com\/?p=2032"},"modified":"2011-08-29T17:03:41","modified_gmt":"2011-08-29T22:03:41","slug":"compassion-is-a-sign-of-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.womens-spirituality.com\/?p=2032","title":{"rendered":"Compassion is a sign of mental health. . ."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The above statement is attributed to Gloria Steinem. \u00a0The interviewer was pushing her to be upset about the bickering among the &#8220;players&#8221; in the political arena, and her response was that every one has a right to his or her opinion. She elaborated by saying, in regard to every one, that having\u00a0<em><strong>compassion is a sign of mental health,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0compassion for wherever some one is on their path. \u00a0Truth is simple and nonetheless strong. \u00a0And her statement was both simple and strong. \u00a0Allowing people <em>&#8220;whatever<\/em>\u00a0<em>truth&#8221;<\/em> they choose to live by is both freeing and kind. \u00a0And it does not mean we have to agree with it.<\/p>\n<p>Having compassion for others, regardless of who they are and what their opinions may be, takes willingness coupled with commitment. \u00a0At times even prayer and perseverance. \u00a0But the outcome of being compassionate is peace of mind and relief, the kind that comes with letting go.<\/p>\n<p>We can&#8217;t change others, in fact, any thing about others. \u00a0We can only accept them, <strong>or not<\/strong>, \u00a0as they are. \u00a0Acceptance doesn&#8217;t mean we have to love what others do or say; it only means we are willing to allow them their &#8220;space;&#8221; their perspective without our interference. \u00a0If we feel we must interfere, we aren&#8217;t showing compassion, acceptance or respect. \u00a0We are not receiving the<strong> lessons<\/strong> the presence of that individual has come to teach and we are the losers as a result.<\/p>\n<p>Making the decision to be compassionate is the first step to changing one&#8217;s behavior. \u00a0It can become a habit, just as easily as being judgmental has been a habit for so many of us. \u00a0Pausing before allowing our minds to judge, or changing our mind in the middle of a judgmental thought, (an action that is possible), is a good first step. \u00a0Then softening our hearts is the second step. \u00a0Think of it as kindness. \u00a0Making the decision to be kind is what being compassionate is all about. \u00a0It can begin with a smile. \u00a0The nod of one&#8217;s head. \u00a0A silent prayer.<\/p>\n<p>Think of developing compassion as a worthy challenge if it isn&#8217;t presently your default setting. \u00a0It will add to the health of one&#8217;s family; the well being of one&#8217;s community; the wholeness of the world at large. \u00a0Savor the softened heart that is <em><strong>your by-product<\/strong><\/em> of the expression of compassion. \u00a0It will make you want to &#8220;live in this space&#8221; more often. \u00a0Maybe always.<\/p>\n<p>Being compassionate is a goal worth one&#8217;s effort. \u00a0It has huge payoffs for all of humankind. \u00a0You can add to that pay off beginning now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The above statement is attributed to Gloria Steinem. \u00a0The interviewer was pushing her to be upset about the bickering among the &#8220;players&#8221; in the political arena, and her response was that every one has a right to his or her opinion.
