Having a Higher Power as one’s companion makes every circumstance in our lives manageable and tolerable if we utilize the help that is available to us. \u00a0It also means we are never experiencing any thing alone. \u00a0Those instances when we feel forgotten or scared or even threatened, we can, if we choose to, take a deep breath and let “our very willing companion” guide us, speak through<\/em><\/strong> us, and comfort us.<\/p>\n

I had no idea of “His” availability when I came into the recovery rooms. \u00a0I had been assuming, for decades, that I was acting alone. \u00a0That I was solely in charge of my life. \u00a0Actually, I never ever thought I needed a guide. \u00a0The truth of the matter, I was a very self-willed woman and wanted no words of advice from any one. I had never taken them from my parents so the suggestion from a sponsor and others that I needed to consider allowing God into my life, and to listen for His suggestions,<\/strong> seemed unnatural to me.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t until I truly became willing to look at my past and all of the experiences I had had that could have killed me that I allowed myself to wonder if just perhaps, there had been “a God” watching over me. \u00a0From there it was a quick and easy decision to believe that some thing had been present, God or an angel, it didn’t matter. \u00a0I found this idea strangely comforting then. \u00a0I still do. \u00a0In fact, it sustains me on a daily basis now.<\/p>\n

I know men and women in all walks of life that can’t seem to adopt this belief system. \u00a0Some are my friends. \u00a0A couple are in my family. \u00a0I don’t wear my beliefs on my sleeve but I do let others know what has given me such peace and comfort in my life. \u00a0I do share, when asked, that I am a firm believer that a presence of some kind, call it what you want, hovers around us to soften the blows, when they come. to nudge us in another direction when that looks like a good idea.<\/p>\n

No one insists that we ever acknowledge this companion.<\/em> Not even the companion, himself. \u00a0But He will remain in our lives, nonetheless. \u00a0I find that very comforting. \u00a0It’s very humbling too. \u00a0God doesn’t need our praises, or our acknowledgement. \u00a0He will simply rest “in the recesses” of our lives and when the boulders head toward us, he will lead us to a safety.<\/p>\n

If you aren’t a believer in this idea, that’s okay. \u00a0As I just said, God doesn’t need you to believe in him. \u00a0He will continue to believe in you any way. \u00a0I find that comforting, indeed.<\/p>\n
