I heard an interesting talk tonight. \u00a0The speaker outlined how the steps, one by one, had a spiritual hook that pulled us in the right, and<\/strong><\/em> sober direction. \u00a0He reminded us of the line in the big book<\/strong><\/em> of Alcoholics Anonymous that says, and I paraphrase, \u00a0“there will come a time when you are face to face with a drink (or a drug), and only God and your spiritual fitness can save you.” \u00a0Even though I have not been faced with that in my nearly 35 years of sobriety, I don’t doubt that it silently waits for each of us. \u00a0Unfortunately, I know more than a few who have succumbed. \u00a0Some have made it back. \u00a0Many have not.<\/p>\n

My commitment to this way of life, a life that includes multiple meetings a week, daily contact with other people in recovery, and prayer coupled with meditation; blesses me every day. \u00a0Because of my journey I am at peace now, a state of mind I could never have imagined attaining during the first three decades of my life. \u00a0And the peace I experience adds to the peace of others I believe. \u00a0Here is how it works, I think:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whoever is drawn into one’s “circle” throughout the day is influenced by the connection that is made and that connection, in turn, eventually touches <\/em>all the other folks on the planet. \u00a0I realize this seems like a stretch, and I thought so too when I first heard it discussed at a convention that was focused on the influence of the spiritual world on the scientific mind. \u00a0But I was fascinated and the theory eventually made sense. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

This information triggered recall too. \u00a0I remembered learning about Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle when I was in graduate school many years earlier and it postulated that the presence of the observer, in an experiment, affected the outcome of that same experiment. \u00a0The two were not inviolate. \u00a0Subjectivity is the norm. \u00a0In science, in all aspects of life, in relationships too, of course. \u00a0And finally, we are all in relationship with one another. \u00a0Regardless of how near or far apart we are, we are connected. <\/span><\/p>\n

And to bring this back to tonight’s talk, I think the speaker would say that since we are connected, our attachment to a spiritual way of life is even more important. \u00a0What happens for one, happens for all. \u00a0It makes it pretty important that each one of us is doing our part. \u00a0Wouldn’t you agree?<\/span><\/p>\n
