I love this simple reminder from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. \u00a0It has been the perfect response to sponsees who are fretting about their future. \u00a0And, it is the best reminder I, too, can utilize for my own occasional fretting. \u00a0I say occasional because I seldom get overwhelmed about the future these days. \u00a0All I really have to do is take a moment to recall what God has done for me in the past week. \u00a0I know that my needs, every day, are being attended to. \u00a0And when I extend my vision far into the past, the examples of how God revealed himself are countless.<\/p>\n
Being told by a sponsor many decades ago that I really didn’t need to know any thing more than what was happening at the present moment seemed like heresy. \u00a0My entire life needed to be carefully orchestrated. \u00a0I was sure of it. \u00a0And I needed to be the one directing the orchestra. \u00a0Fortunately she pointed out that my directing was what got me into the many predicaments that landed me in AA. \u00a0I can still remember being chagrined by her comment. \u00a0I was so intent on always looking good, and being in control. \u00a0She could see right through me. Fortunately.<\/p>\n
Many years have passed since she shared her assessment of me and now I freely give to others her words of wisdom. \u00a0How lucky we are that we have only this moment to be concerned about. \u00a0I love the freedom of living in the now. \u00a0I didn’t think I’d ever be able to do it. \u00a0(And I’m far from perfect at it!) I remember reading a book by Ram Daas 30 years ago titled Be Here Now<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0I loved the book and the circular form he wrote it in, but I had absolutely no idea how to live as he suggested. \u00a0Every waking moment for me was an anxious one because I was looking to the future to assure me that I was okay in the present.<\/p>\n What changed? \u00a0Many things coalesced, no doubt, but I can point to a couple significant experiences where “God” made an appearance, not as a vision, but in words that were shared with me. \u00a0When this happens for any one of us, nothing ever seems the same again. \u00a0In one instance a woman appeared who had not been expected and she shed light on an experience that I was having. Her words were literally life-saving. \u00a0In the other instance I was actually given the words to say even though I didn’t perceive who “the giver was” at the time.
