It’s a gift, perhaps, but it’s a terribly hard gift to be grateful for if we have just had a truck accident like the one my nephew had a few days ago. \u00a0(see the blog on “split second” to get the details) How could that be a gift, you might say? How I explain a situation like that to myself is to believe that a great lesson was being offered even within the accident. \u00a0The lesson might have been: the value of sleep can’t be underestimated. \u00a0Or that letting your eyes waver from the road, even for a nanosecond, can lead to disaster. \u00a0Or maybe the lesson is that Eddie has not fulfilled his purpose here or he would not have survived the accident. The latter is the one I prefer to believe.<\/p>\n
We do all have a specific purpose, a particular role to play in the lives of all those people we meet on a daily basis. \u00a0Not one experience has been unplanned for us. \u00a0We are on a learning curve and have been invited to every situation we’ve shown up for. \u00a0It’s not likely we realize how divinely orchestrated our lives are. \u00a0We don’t need to know, in fact. \u00a0Our job is to trust and simply show up where it \u00a0seems we are being nudged to show up. \u00a0We can be sure, however, that we are in the right place at the right time.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Personally I think this makes every experience in my day exciting. \u00a0Knowing that there is a divine hand in all of it gives my life a special feel. \u00a0Throughout my life before I got into recovery, I truly believed there was nothing “out there,” that my life was running along willy-nilly and I could hit a brick wall at any moment. \u00a0I don’t remember worrying much about this but I did hunger for freedom from the free-floating anxiety that was my constant companion. \u00a0Quite likely my anxiety was because I had no spiritual foundation, but I hadn’t really been introduced to one in my family and I surely didn’t seek one when I was in the throes of my addiction.<\/p>\n When I look back on that very first 12 Step meeting I attended in 1974 I can say, with certainty, that I was in the right place at the right time. \u00a0And when I went to the first AA meeting in 1976, that was perfect timing too. \u00a0Being in San Diego this week end to do a workshop and a book signing allowed me to meet women and men I absolutely needed to meet. \u00a0What a gift to know this. \u00a0What a gift to be able to share this knowledge with others too.<\/p>\n Are you paying close attention to all the people who are around you? \u00a0Do. \u00a0Their presence is divine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" It’s a gift, perhaps, but it’s a terribly hard gift to be grateful for if we have just had a truck accident like the one my nephew had a few days ago. \u00a0(see the blog on “split second” to get the details) How could that be a gift, you might say?
